ABSTRACT
APPLIED ART IN THE PROJECT OF ARTISTIC EDUCATION
The study of applied art allows artistic skills to be applied to practical and useful applications. In art education projects, it is a method of multisensory learning that simultaneously develops and deepens understanding of history, culture, and aesthetics.
Type design, poster design, book design and exhibition design are traditional components in the training of students at the Institute for Art Education at the University of Leipzig, where students are trained for teaching and art education outside of school.
With a review of the history of the Leipzig Institute and the importance of the applied arts in Leipzig – especially typography, applied graphics and book design — the lecture draws a line to the Institute’s teaching projects and projects with various partners in recent years — especially in the field of type design and typography.
The aspects of the congress — education through art, education for art and art as a tool in social change — play an exemplary role in these projects.
