ABSTRACT
EXPLORE, REFLECT, CHANGE: CREATIVE LEARNING IN THE ART MUSEUM
This presentation examines how the art museum can be a space for creativity and creative teaching and learning. Drawing on theories of creative learning that articulate the value of this form of exploratory, reflexive and emancipatory pedagogy, the paper considers how and why the art museum can be a supportive space for learners to create new understandings about art, themselves and the world. The presentation, however, also identifies some of the challenges and barriers to creative learning in the art museum. At the same time, the paper argues strongly for the necessary values, structures and systems to be in place for creative teaching and learning to thrive in these cultural institutions and makes the case for why creative teaching and learning is needed now more than ever.
